How overtime pay is calculated
Overtime pay is the extra hours times a higher hourly rate. Time and a half is the regular rate times 1.5. At $20 an hour, 8 overtime hours are $240. The 40 regular hours are still $800, so gross pay for that week is $1,040.
| Hourly rate | Overtime hours | 1.5× rate | Overtime pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| $15 | 5 | $22.50 | $112.50 |
| $20 | 8 | $30.00 | $240.00 |
| $25 | 10 | $37.50 | $375.00 |
Many US jobs use 1.5× after 40 hours in a workweek. This overtime calculator does not decide which hours count. Put the overtime hours in yourself, then use the time and a half calculator or the double time calculator if the rate is fixed.

FAQ
How do you calculate overtime pay?
Multiply overtime hours by the hourly rate, then by 1.5 for time and a half. At $20 an hour, 8 overtime hours are $240. Regular hours are paid at the normal rate and added on top.
What is time and a half?
Time and a half means 1.5 times the regular hourly rate. A $20 wage becomes $30 for each overtime hour.
Does this calculator take out taxes?
No. The total is gross pay before federal tax, state tax, and FICA. Your paycheck will be lower.
Does every job use 40 hours?
This page does not apply state overtime laws. It multiplies the regular hours, overtime hours, and rate you type. Many US jobs use 1.5× after 40 hours in a workweek, but some states use different daily rules.
